The Silos

Follow along as we build this community of
silo houses for you to rent.

Welcome to The Silos

This project is a one-of-a-kind retreat nestled in the heart of Kentucky's Red River Gorge. And they're not your average farm silos.

These 8 silver grain bins are being transformed into six stunning vacation rentals, each with its own distinct personality. Whether you're seeking a minimalist Swedish escape, a chic and modern haven, or a basecamp for outdoor adventures, there's one here that's calling your name.

Gather your family or friends and experience this once-in-a-lifetime stay!

Fire up the grill at the shared silo-bar, challenge your crew to a game of corn hole, or simply relax and swap stories under the starlit sky.

Located in Beattyville, KY, The Silos offer the perfect blend of seclusion and convenience. You'll be steps away from the thrilling trails of Hollerwood Off-Road Adventure Park and a short drive from the Gorge's iconic natural wonders. Spend your days hiking, climbing, and exploring, then return to your cozy silo to recharge and reconnect.

Below you will see the story of how these structures have come to life, as well as when we plan to launch them to the public. I, Mike, hope that you enjoy reading it, as much as I've enjoyed bringing them to life.

If you're interested in visiting, sign up for the giveaway and I'll keep you informed as they are finished and ready to go live!

The Beginning

The project started as an idea to build a 300 sq ft treehouse in 2019. The plan has evolved quite a bit since then.

I'll walk you through each phase up to present day below.

Each house will offer an amenity line-up that is specifically put in place to help you relax, connect with friends & family, and create new meaningful memories in the Gorge.

Our team has designed these homes to facilitate small groups & families. Each will come with a full kitchen, big decks for entertaining, and parking for 4x4 trailers. In addition, each will have a hot tub, outdoor games, big screen TVs and much more. (A few even come with surprises that won't be released until they are ready to be booked)

The homes themselves will be open to all guests, but were designed specifically with adventurers (4x4, hikers, climbers, etc.) in mind. Launch date is set for mid-2025 (a more specific date will be posted here when available).

Phase 1: Location

We learned about this land through a mutual friend.

It's 8.14 acres in total and has some incredible rock features, creeks, and little caves scattered throughout the property. We're only using approximately 4 acres for our silo-based structures, and we'll determine the future use of the remaining land next year.

When we first acquired it, there was a pile of old bird cages, storage sheds, and other small structures that had partially collapsed in the center of our build site. From what we could tell they'd been there for years. As the entrance to the neighborhood, the pile of dilapidated structures was an eyesore that we were eager to remove.

Step one in development would be just that, clean up the grounds.

Take a peek at all of those buildings below.

(This is what we call build sites #3 and #4)

The lot with the largest footprint was just above the bird cages. This one will be the home of a 3-bedroom, 2 bathroom, single-silo structure.

Being the largest lot, it offers parking for 3 cars, a trailer or two, and still has space for landscaping, lawn games, hot tubs, and more!

***Old yard refrigerator not included with any rentals.

(This is what we call build site 41)

The lots you see when you drive down Fixer Rd (most likely where you found this page) are #1 and #2.

The lower lot with the creek will be developed into a fun common area later, but for now we're focusing on lot #2 with a double-hitter!

The two large platforms will make up homes #1 and #2. The shed to the side will be used by our host team for storage, cleaning, and general work. Each platform will hold a single silo house that contains a large living area, 3-bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and fully-stocked kitchen that is thought out to maximize space and light.

Phase 2: Site Clearing

The moment we got approval to start, we went to mark the location of each house and got to work clearing the grounds for each build. This was just one day into construction and it's already looking a lot better.

Day 2 & 3 things are actually starting to look organized. Trees are out, garbage is thrown away, and the pile is ready for an oversize bonfire!

Phase 3: Foundations

Once the trees & garbage were removed from the build sites, footers started to go in to build the huge decks you see on site today.

We didn't want to level the lots, since the Gorge is full of naturally hilly landscapes. Instead we decided to raise the houses up on platforms.

The footers you see below provide the foundations for the large decks that hold the houses. You can see the first two poured in the image below.

Phase 4: Decks

Talk about a transformation!!

With the bird cages & storage sheds removed, the trees allowing some sunlight in, and now these massive 40' - 60' decks in place, the space looks completely different.

We are building 7 decks in total. 6 for houses, and 1 for the common area silo (keep reading to see that).

Each deck will have space for all sorts of memories to be made with guests & families that visit. Some of the most popular amenities at our other cabins will be standard here, including hot tubs, ladder golf, corn hole, outdoor dining, and much more.

Phase 5: Silo Install

In total we brought in 8 grain silos. They came from Ohio with a specialized team that tours the country installing them. It's pretty wild to watch them build, since they build the roof first, then lift the entire structure to add rings on the bottom until it reaches it's full height.

It only took them three days to put all 8 together!

Upon completion, the silos themselves will be visible both on the outside and inside of the home. They will encircle the living room, and have a large walkway cut out of them to open up the kitchen.

Take a look below at some of the install photos I was able to capture.

Phase 6: Walls Up

One day after the silos went up, the walls were under construction.

It's amazing to me how quickly, and how many times the entire look of the project changes. If you were riding your jeep around just two weeks ago, all you would have seen are big wooden platforms at the entrance to the development.

Then today, BAM!

A full-blown house structure is standing there.

It looks incredible, and the vision that our team has been working on for over a year is finally coming to life.

Phase 7: Siding, Electrical, & Plumbing

Walls are up and roofs are on! And just in time for terrible weather, thanks goodness. We've got a lot of snow, torrential rain, then more snow throughout January.

Normally, this weather would put us a little behind on schedule but since we're dried in, we're moving full steam ahead. Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC are in the first three cabins, and being worked the last three now.

Lastly, painting the silos has begun! Each silo will have a different color, to match it's different theme.

So far, we're ahead of schedule, which is something that we never expected to say with a project this big!
